Thank you for your interest in the post of Geophysical Survey Support Officer, based at John Sinclair House in Edinburgh. This is a fixed term appointment for 3 years.

You will join an Archaeological Survey Team of ten staff with a remit to undertake large-area, thematic, site and landscape surveys across Scotland, drawing on field archaeology and earthwork survey, remote sensing data, aerial survey and geophysics. In your role as Geophysical Survey Support Officer, you will support that programme of work and help to enhance the National Record of the Historic Environment (NRHE).

In this role you will gain comprehensive experience in the practice of geophysical survey for archaeology.

One of the statutory roles of HES is to identify, record, understand and interpret elements of the historic environment. The Archaeological Survey team do this through long-running programmes (e.g. Aerial Survey and Large Area Survey) and targeted projects that consider specific sites or landscapes, often combining research on survey practice and archaeological questions with the bread-and-butter work of recording. One element of this work is a recently established 5-year geophysics project that aims to build capacity and expertise in this field at HES and contribute to the development of archaeological geophysics in Scotland. You will be a key member of the geophysics team for three years, working on a range of field projects, data processing and interpretation, archiving and dissemination. In this role you will also work with other archaeological survey colleagues on integrated multi-source approaches to documenting and understanding sites and landscapes.
